The electric chair was devised as a more humane system of  execution to replace hanging. It was develped by two employees of Thomas Edison, first used in 1890, and used by more than 25 states throughout the 20th century. Nicknames for "the chair" include “Old Sparky”, “Sisslin’ Sally”, “Old Smokey”, and “Gruesome Gurtie”.

 

 

This is an example of a chair made in the last half of the 19th century to help the handicapped.  Beautiful reproduction in 
solid walnut.
